21 June every year is celebrated as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) since the proclamation by the United Nations. This year is the tenth International Day of Yoga and is even more special. In the last decade, the International Day of Yoga (IDY) has become a global movement promoting the practice of yoga for health and well-being across the world, embraced by all cultures and all continents recognizing its benefits for individuals and societies.
Viet Nam has been an important partner in disseminating benefits of yoga and celebrating the International Day of Yoga over the last decade. The immense popularity of Yoga in Viet Nam provides a strong cultural and people-to-people connection between the two countries. Through the celebration of International Day of Yoga, we encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to promote the message of peace and harmony. The growing acceptance of yoga represents positive trend of the time of mindfulness and sustainable lifestyle with new ideas, some rooted in traditional knowledge and others in 21st century innovation for greater global good.
The 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY) was observed in Hanoi on 20 June 2024 at Quan Ngua Sports Complex, Van Cao Street, Ba Dinh District with participation of Deputy Foreign Minister H.E. Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang, Vice Chairman of Vietnam-India Parliamentary Friendship group Mr. Luu Van Duc, Ambassadors of India, Philippines, Azerbaijan, Thailand, Iran, Francophone etc., diplomats, senior officials of various ministries, CPV, yoga clubs and individual practioners etc. This year, the Embassy of India in Hanoi and its Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City will be organizing the 10th International Day of Yoga in about 40 provinces/cities of Viet Nam in cooperation with provincial authorities and partners. These have already been held in 26 Provinces, namely, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Ninh Thuan, Lam Dong, Lai Chau, Vinh Long, Kon Tum, Dien Bien, Binh Thuan, Dak Lak, Dong Nai, Vinh Phuc, Quang Binh, Yen Bai, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Bien Hoa, Bac Ninh, Can Tho, Hanoi and Tien Giang.
This year’s International Day of Yoga is being given the theme “Yoga for Self and Society”. For an individual, Yoga promotes oneness of mind, body and soul. For the society, it brings harmony between humanity and nature. Yoga also serves as a bridge between the individual and society, fostering a consciousness of unity, of being one, of being together.
The Prime Minister of India H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, in his personal letter addressed to Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam H.E. Mr. Pham Minh Chinh has expressed gratitude for enthusiastic contribution towards promoting Yoga among people in Viet Nam and has wished success for celebrating the 10th International Day of Yoga in Vietnam.
The Embassy of India appreciates the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam, and the provincial/city authorities for their active support and participation in the events to mark the 10th International Day of Yoga.
